A husband and wife who abused their positions as attorneys of the husband's elderly parents have been sentenced to six years in prison and ordered to return the money they stole.

The couple had made over 100 transfers from the husband's parents' bank accounts to their own and had spent more than £59,000 in 11 months. They had also sold his parents' cars and house, keeping the proceeds for themselves. By the time his mother died, she and his father were living in a converted garage. Meanwhile, the couple spent his parents' money on house renovations, a gold BMW, stays in luxury UK hotels and holidays in Jamaica.

The judge described the couple's behaviour as a 'despicable display of greed, vanity and selfishness'. They were convicted of fraud by abuse of position and money laundering and sentenced to six years' imprisonment. They were also given a confiscation order of £289,773. The entirety of the confiscation order will be repaid to the husband's 86-year-old father as compensation, ensuring that all of the money stolen will be returned to him.

The couple must pay the confiscation order within three months or face a further three-year term of imprisonment.
