History

Susan Howarth formed her legal practice following a career within the probation and social services, utilising the wide first hand experience she had gained there. After qualifying in law she was determined to provide a specialist practice able to give practical help and provide the sensitivity needed in a wide range of family law issues and in 1997 Susan Howarth & Company Solicitors was born.

The firm was further strengthened in the fields of family law and child protection from 2000 onwards, with the development of the Care Team within the Family Law Department.

Today Susan Howarth & Company Solicitors provides a range of specialist services covering every aspect of family law (including divorce, separation, child law, care, adoption and mediation), commercial and residential conveyancing, wills, trusts, powers of attorney and probate, and services for the elderly.

The firm offers services to both private and publicly funded clients and the company has the benefit of a Family Law Contract with the Legal Aid Agency to enable the efficient delivery to those eligible for legal aid.

The Firm has been Lexcel accredited for 13 consecutive years and specialist staff are members of "Resolution." See our Accreditations page for further specialist areas we are members of. We have also taken pride in recently becoming recognised as one of the top 500 law firms in the United Kingdom in respect of  our family law and care specialism, the firm has been recognised in The Legal 500 for the last 11 years, ranked as a Band 3 Leading Law Firm for the last 4 consecutive years with Susan Howarth also ranked as a Leading Individual for 4 consecutive years before being inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2023, and Victoria Poole being ranked as a Leading Partner in 2026. The practice has also been recognised in the prestigious Chambers & Partners legal directory for the last 6 years, ranked as a Band 3 Firm for Matrimonial/Family Law for the last 3 consecutive years and in 2023, with both Susan Howarth and Victoria Poole having been ranked as Notable Practitioners and more recently, Victoria Poole being ranked as a Band 3 lawyer.

SH&Co. won the 2023 and 2022 AI Legal Awards for Best Family and Childcare Law Firm (North West).and have been finalists in the 2020 and 2021 Lexis Nexis Family Law Awards for the Family Law Firm of the Year (North).
