The importance for owners of houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) of keeping them in good condition is highlighted by a recent case in which the owners of a house that had 24 residents were fined for a number of failures.
The house was found to have inadequate fire precautions, cooking and washing facilities and was poorly maintained overall. In total, the owners pleaded guilty to 26 breaches of the Management of Houses in Multiple Occupation (England) Regulations 2006 and an offence contrary to Section 72 of the Housing Act 2004.
Hammersmith Magistrates' Court fined the owners more than £8,000 and ordered them to pay costs of £4,790.
